Barcelo Ron Dominicano Anejo Rum

Deadhead Rum 10 Year Old L.E. Anniversary Edition

Deadhead

750 ml | 35% ABV
Rum

When we created Deadhead Rum in 2011, we did so because we wanted to bring deserved attention to, and honor to, the storied history of rum production in México.

After all, since the 18th-century, sugarcane has been a major crop in México and rum is considered a national beverage. Today, México has more sugar mills than any of its Caribbean neighbors.

Last year, México produced 56.8 million tons of sugarcane making it the sixth largest producer in the world. And while México is internationally known for its tequila and mezcal, the fine rums coming out of México have gone largely unnoticed by the world rum scene.

At Deadhead Rum we set out from the beginning to change that global neglect. Starting with partnering with the most-awarded distillery in México, Rones de México, a family-owned artisanal distillery that’s been making handcrafted exceptional rum since 1948. Its master distiller, Jorge Perez Rafael, is the most decorated distiller in México.

And while we found just the right distillery and master blender, we didn’t wish to put our fine rum in just any common bottle. We wanted our bottle to stand out on a retail shelf and behind the bar. And we wanted our bottle to represent a cultural connection to the history of  México. The shrunken head pays tribute to Mayan rituals of triumph, family, and honor in the Chiapas region.

We were honored as well when The Tasting Panel gave Headhead Rum a 95-point rating and our Deadhead Dark Chocolate Rum a 92-point rating.

To celebrate our ten years of commitment to making the very finest rum and putting Méxican rum its rightful place on the global rum map, we asked our master blender Jorge to create a 10th Anniversary Limited Edition Deadhead rum and disappoint us he did not.

The Deadhead Anniversary rum is extraordinary. This elegant 80-proof spirit features a whiskey-style nose of stone fruit and maple syrup. Brown sugar melts on the tongue, followed by cigar-leaf and sassafras. Toasted pecan and oatmeal drive even more textual complexity. Oak and leather are magnificent on the finish, which delivers pure depth of character.

Each amber glass-bottle features a black-matte, copper-foil embossed label that is hand-numbered. This sleek, stunning 10th Anniversary Limited Edition bottle will surely be a back-lit beauty on top shelves of bars and Tiki lounges everywhere. The 10th Anniversary Limited Edition bottle will be available June 2021.

For us, the past ten years have been an exciting (and certainly challenging) ride. And although we knew we had the finest rum and outstanding packaging (winning dozens of medals including Gold and Double Gold for taste at the Craft Competition International Awards, Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of American, BTI and Sip Awards and a Platinum Medal for bottle design at the Sips Awards) it hasn’t been a cakewalk in the hypercompetitive spirits marketplace.

We are a small, family-owned company competing against the deep-pocketed global rum marketers producing oceans of rum from better-known rum countries such as Barbados, Jamaica, and Cuba.

But like the shrunken head ritual of the Mayan civilization, we have empowered ourselves with the spirit of our global rum adversaries and market challenges and are finding creative and committed ways to put Deadhead rum and the Méxican rum industry front and center.

Even though Deadhead rum started 10 years ago, facing the slings and arrows of uncontrollable variables such as distribution disruptions and a global pandemic, in some ways we feel born again. The new (or renewed) kid on the block. We’re back and we’re not going away.

STORY

130 Years Overcoming Adversities Earthquakes, Volcanic Eruptions, Civil Wars, Plane Crash.

A Young Italian Embarks on an Adventure

This story began 1875 when Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa, a young adventurer from Genoa, Italy, risked everything by leaving behind his family and the comforts of the old continent to travel to the exotic country of Nicaragua.

A Steamboat Route to Unite the Oceans

Initially, he invested in a shorter and safer steam boat route through Nicaragua to transport passengers and goods from the East Coast of the US to the West Coast during the height of the California Gold Rush. The route was a huge success, but when news broke about the construction of the Panama Canal and the U.S. coast-to-coast railroad, Alfredo Francisco knew it was time to set out on a new adventure.

The Flor de Caña Story begins in 1890

In 1890, he found the perfect setting for the Flor de Caña distillery at the base of the San Cristóbal volcano, the tallest and most active volcano in Nicaragua. The fertility of its surrounding lands, the enriched water and the hot volcanic climate proved to be instrumental in forging the rum’s unique and smooth flavor.

Through its 130-year history, the brand, the company and the family have lived through a plane crash, a civil war, nationalizations, hyperinflation, fires, hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

About the Brand

Since our first batch of rum was bottled and distilled in September 2009, the Kōloa Rum Company has been bringing The Spirit of Aloha to the world.

To produce Kōloa Rum, we first start with pristine rainwater from Mount Waiʻaleʻale and the nearby mountain peaks and rainforests that filtered through volcanic strata into vast underground aquifers. Our rums only use pure “tall cane” sugarcane, locally sourced coffee, chocolate and ingredients to develop authentic flavors of the spirits we produce.

Using these unique, authentic ingredients, our premium Hawaiian rums are twice-distilled, blended, bottled, and shipped directly from the distillery in Kalaheo, on the south side of the beautiful Garden Isle of Kauaʻi. The Kōloa Rum Distillery Team is proud to produce and ship across the U.S. mainland, Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Japan and Western Canada. Our rums are distilled in single batches using our vintage (circa 1947) 1,210-gallon copper-pot still, with a copper column and condenser. During the second distillation, the distillate is collected in three sections – heads, heart, and tails. Kōloa Rum uses only the heart of the batch.

Our unique distillation process and quality ingredients used combine to provide the smooth, clean and polished flavor and aroma characteristics that distinguishes Kōloa Rum from most others.

Info
Distilled, blended and bottled by Kōloa Rum Company Kalaheo, Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi, 40% ABV/80 Proof.

Kōloa Dark Rum is made from pure cane sugar, distilled in an impressive vintage 1,210 gallon, steam-powered copper pot still and cut with filtered water from the ancient Mount Waiʻaleʻale.

The rum is distilled 2 times at 160 – 180 ABV.

Appearance
This dark rum is a genuinely deep chocolate brown that rolls with a cloying viscosity around the glass, developing into thick, slowly rolling light black coffee colored legs.

Nose
Kōloa Dark Rum has a robustly vanilla nose that envelopes the perimeter of the glass, upon further and closer whiffs of this aromatic vanilla behemoth subtler notes of dark semi-sweet chocolate, fresh brewed espresso and chocolate cupcakes arrive to round out the olfactory experience.

Taste and Finish
This vanilla-driven dark rum sings from the nose to the glass exactly. It presents itself with robust flavors of vanilla, dark semi-sweet chocolate and lightly finishes with espresso, all encompassed within a dry, highly flavorful dark rum.
