Glendalough Double Barrel Irish Whiskey

Glendalough

750 ml | 42% ABV
Whiskey | Irish

Glendalough is an idyllic little town in eastern Ireland. Gaelic for "valley of two lakes," it was said to have been founded by a man named Saint Cemgen also known as Saint Kevin. The Glendalough Distillery, Ireland's first new craft distillery, was set up by five friends from Wicklow and Dublin with a deep passion for reviving the heritage of craft distilling in Ireland. The 18th & 19th centuries there were the glory days of the Irish whiskey industry, with over 200 licensed distilleries in all of Ireland. There were also countless unlicensed distilleries at the time, producing diverse styles of poitn, whiskey, gin and even absinthe. But through a series of unfortunate events, the Irish Whiskey Industry dried to a trickle in the 1970's. Glendalough Distillery is part of a revival of this Irish heritage. Their philosophy is "to make innovative spirits while staying true to the tradition and heritage of our ancestors." Glendalough started out making poitn the traditional Irish distillate made in small pot stills. From there they seamlessly transitioned to whiskey production, and most recently, seasonal, wild botanical gins. All of their production is handmade. This unique single grain, is a light and floral whiskey distilled in a Coffey still from a mash bill of Irish malted barley and corn. "It spends three and a half years in American oak first-fill Bourbon barrels before being finished for six months in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks. The Bourbon barrels impart deep, robust chocolate and caramel notes, while the Oloroso casks lighten the palate with fruitier notes and touches of nutty tones. With both barrels being oak, you get that beautiful vanilla thread youd expect to run through an Irish whiskey. Both barrels are porous too, allowing Ireland's temperate, maritime air through to make its impression" (producer).

This centuries old tradition is distilled from sugar beets and malted barley, before being subtly aged in virgin oak casks.

This very special, small-batch Gin takes the Wild Gin recipe and redistills it with extra fruit, flowers, spices and an abundance of fresh rose petals.Three varieties of rose are used including the rare and elusive Wild Rose from the Wicklow mountains, large fragrant Heritage Roses and the ancient prized Damask Rose. Combined these roses create a naturally pink, very floral gin. The delicate nature of petals requires a more gentle, slower distillation than the wild botanical gin. Vapor distillation is more efficient in extracting the essential oils and flavors. After distillation, the gin is further infused with even more roses to deepen the flavors and create a beautiful pink hue. Floral, fragrant and flavorful, this unique gin is the product of endless experimentation with plants, fruit, spices, and flowers.

St Kevin of Glendalough

The story of St Kevin is where we draw our inspiration. He abandoned safety and comfort to follow his passion and create something more meaningful in the mountains. Born of Irish royalty but a man apart, St Kevin disappeared into the mountains and became one with the wild. For 7 years he lived off the land by the upper lake of Glendalough and pondered his place in the world. He would stand and pray, arms outstretched and often up to his waist in the lake, just to add to the challenge. He did this so often and for so long, that one fateful day a blackbird landed in his hand.
He was so at one with nature, she felt safe enough to lay her eggs. This he took as a sign, as a test of his resolve. So he stood day and night until the eggs hatched and the chicks fledged.

One of many stories that spread around Ireland and inspired people to seek out this holy man and his deep, hidden valley. He eventually built his "City of 7 Churches" by the lower lake that still stands 14 centuries later.

Glendalough's Mizunara

Glendalough's Mizunara 7-year single malt is vivid, but delicate with seamless depth. It is vibrant, fruity, and floral on the nose, enjoying a luxuriously smooth mouthfeel with notes of dark chocolate orange, sandalwood and cinnamon synonymous with Mizunara whiskeys. This unique whiskey benefits from an exceptionally long finish of toasted oak and oriental spices, with the dark chocolate lingering even longer.
